Firemen and Exterminators!

We had an exciting day today. This morning while Mary Clare and I were out running some errands, the workmen began to cut out the remaining drywall upstairs. Evidently, all the dust they produced set off the smoke detectors which triggered ADT to call the Fire Dept. Just as I got home with a load of groceries 4 big fire engines pulled up and what seemed like 50 fire fighters began running around the house. It was a lucky thing that I got there just then -- I hadn't planned on going home for another hour. I was able to disarm the alarm, but the Lieutenant and some of his men still needed to inspect the house so they trooped around in full gear -- oxygen tanks, masks, helmets, axes, etc. Mary Clare got quite a kick out of it!

The good news is that the renovations are moving quickly. Much of the demolition is done and the bathroom is completely framed. The bad news is that the carpenters found some LIVE brown recluse spiders. So this afternoon we had to call a moratorium on the work while the exterminators treated the house. Dylan and Lou spent the day at the vets office and Mary Clare and I spent the time shopping for fixtures for the new bathroom.

As the workers have pulled out the walls they discovered some relics from the past. It appears as though the original workmen who built the house put a time capsule of sorts into the wall -- we found the front page sections of the Nashville Banner, the Sumner County News and the Review Appeal (the local Franklin paper - which is still in business). It turns out the house was actually built in 1918 - not 1919 as we had previously thought. It was fascinating to read about what was going on with World War 1 at the time. They also put some old pot lids in the wall, and we found two marbles, an empty pack of Lucky Strikes cigarettes, a spool of thread, and a small metal children's shovel (the type used in a sand box). It has been so much fun to explore our discoveries.
