It's been a few weeks since I posted -- and I have a good excuse this time! Every time I tried to upload pictures my computer crashed - well, I've finally realized why - our modem was on the fritz. Now that I'm connected again, I'm back to blogging!
We had a very quiet New Year's Eve around here. A few days after the big day, my cousin Katie came to spend the night. She left her car with us while she flew home to Texas to visit her family prior to her deployment to Iraq. We were so happy to get one more night with her before she left. On Tuesday of this week the girls and I went up to Ft Campbell in Kentucky to see her off. It was a fascinating trip - if not a little sad! I haven't been on an Army base in a long time, and never a "closed base" like Ft Campbell -- and never one so large. It took a long time just to get the car registered to drive on to the base. Once there, we found Katie but I was so surprised to see her in her uniform with all her gear. I shouldn't have been so shocked, but the last time she drove to her house she came in her pajamas and slippers! This time I saw her, she was wearing her camouflage, helmet, rifle, side arm, body armor and boots! I was so glad to be able to keep her company for the hour or so that she had before her unit had to get on the bus to the base's airport. As hard as it was for us to say goodbye, I can only imagine how tough it was for the parents saying goodbye to their babies and young children.
Here she is again with the girls - Mary Clare is holding pictures that all her friends from school made for Katie. As of today, I've alredy heard from Katie several times and she is settling in and doing great!
We've been having a real cold spell here - as has much of the country. Here is a picture of my camellia bush that was doing fantastic this winter. You'd think after 10 years of living in Tennessee I'd be used to our milder winters, but I am still embarassingly thrilled to have something flowering in January! Before it got too cold the girls and and I wrapped it in Christmas lights and three quilts - although the buds look brown, I think the bush has survived just fine.
So, where was I . . . so far this new year we enjoyed the time off from school and a little extra family time. Although this holiday season Roger was especially busy with work - particularly working on the merger of his law firm with another, resulting in the newly created Bradley Arant Boult Cummings -- http://www.ba-boult.com/ The new firm has over 350 attorneys and seven offices in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Washington, DC. Roger served on the board of Boult Cummings prior to the merger (which consumed alot of time this past year) - and has been elected to the board of the newly merged firm (which may consume even more time this year!). I am really proud of him and all his hard work. To keep him in touch with the girls while he is travelling we've bought a camera for my computer; the girls love talking to him at night! This morning I put my laptop on the kitchen table and we all had breakfast together. Technology is amazing!
