In June both the girls underwent endoscopes to try to get to the root of their reflux problems. The doctors had been encouraging me to have Erin scoped for years, but with the development of Mary Clare's reflux I finally gave in. Mary Clare had her procedure on June 17th. I was worried because it requires general anesthesia - but also worried that Mary Clare would be very anxious. The staff at the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital were wonderful and they sent a child life specialist to help educate her about what to expect. Here she is in pre-op wearing her special pajamas. You can see that she was very relaxed, and stayed that way right up until they took her into the OR.

You can see her name "Mary J" on the work board showing that is is "in the operating room". When we were brought back to the recovery area she was sitting up and chatting with her nurse, enjoying her white cherry icee immensely.

On June 31, Erin had her procedure. I was expecting a similar experience. Unfortunately it didn't go quite as smoothly! Erin was having alot of fun as you can see . . until it was time for her to be taken into the ER. She got really upset and was crying. The doctors sedated her very quickly (they told us later) and she doesn't seem to remember too much about it. However, when were taken to see her in recovery she was much less chipper than Mary Clare had been. She just wanted to get her IV out and go home! After much cajoling from Roger she eventually sipped enough juice to go home.

And Mary Clare took very good care of her for the rest of the afternoon. We have received Mary Clare's results - totally normal! And Erin's physical exam looked good, we are just awaiting the results of the biopsies to see if she has any underlying food allergies.
